With summer vacation time ramping up, you have to make the decision on what to do with your pets. They can be boarded, you could hire a house-sitter to come and stay with Fido or Fluffy or you could plan to take them along with you.
Regardless of whether you're looking at a weekend trip or a cross-country trek, advance planning will make the trip smooth, worry-free, and more enjoyable for all involved. Remember, even if Fluffy or Fido is the mildest mannered pet at home, the stress of a trip could make them jumpy and out of sorts. The change in scenery, being cooped up in a car, and having to deal with new sights and smells could take its toll on your pet. Plan ahead and it can be a good vacation for everyone.
Prior planning will make everything more smooth and enjoyable. Pack your pet's regular food for the trip. Now is not the time to shake up his or her diet. Don't make them have to cope with food they've never sampled before. Their digestive system will thank you. Make certain you plan rest stops about an hour after your pet has eaten.
Even while traveling, you need to make certain your pet has access to fresh water. Their panting and nervousness could make them more thirsty than usual. Drop a few ice cubes into their dish for a slow melting drink.
While you and the family can likely go for several hours before having to stop for bathroom breaks, plan more frequent stops for your pet companion. Be sure you keep your dog securely leashed and pull out the litter box for your kitty.
If you're traveling alone and you need a bathroom break but are in a place that doesn't welcome pets, you can try to 'smuggle' the pet in with you. My miniature poodle happily hops into an oversized purse so I can take her in with me. If that isn't an option, make certain you've planned ahead with an extra car key so you can lock the doors, but keep the engine running and the air conditioning on for your pets' comfort and health.
Don't leave home without our pet's medical records. Make a list of veterinarians' offices along the way before you begin your trip. Also, check for pet friendly hotels before you hit the road.
Your pet should not be allowed to roam freely in your vehicle. Keep her in a pet carrier or buckled into a pet harness.
While not every eventuality can be planned for, planning ahead will make for a more enjoyable family vacation with your pet.
